One of the most common postoperative problems\u00a0is postoperative nausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> The pathophysiological mechanism of postoperative nausea and vomiting is known. This review paper\u00a0investigates the risk factors, prevention and treatment of this postoperative problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Literature Review:<\/strong> The literature search concerned original and review papers published up to 2010, at medical\u00a0databases (MEDLINE, COCHRANE). Essential prerequisite for inducing the articles in the present study was the\u00a0English language and the full text of them. As reported by the literature, the factors that contribute to the occurrence\u00a0of postoperative nausea and vomiting associated with patient characteristics, type of anesthesia, premedication,\u00a0surgery type, duration and number of postoperative factors. Patients occurring postoperative vomiting are\u00a0vulnerable at complications such as electrolyte imbalance and pulmonary aspiration. Therefore, in order to avoid\u00a0deterioration of clinical status, appropriate medication and non-pharmacological interventions are applied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Conclusions:<\/strong> Postoperative nausea and vomiting is multifactorial problem. Aiming to ensure patients\u2019 health,\u00a0it is necessary to prevent rather than treat postoperative nausea and vomiting.
