ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction:<\/strong> Theoretically, caring relationship between faculty \u2013 student generates a caring moment. However, there is a scarcity of empirical evidence about how caring interactions with faculty can enhance students\u2019 caring outcomes.<\/p>\n

Aim:<\/strong> The aim of this study was to identify the levels of students\u2019 and instructors\u2019 caring behavior and to explore the correlations between instructors\u2019 and students\u2019 caring behavior.<\/p>\n

Methods:<\/strong> A descriptive, non \u2013 experimental design has been used in this study. Data collection was based on interviews using two standardized questionnaires; the Nursing Students\u2019 Perception of Instructor Caring (NSPIC) and the Caring Behavior Inventory (CBI). Respondents were consisting of nursing students from identified schools and colleges of nursing in different countries. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 21.0<\/p>\n

Results:<\/strong> The sample was consisted of 368 nursing students (91% female, 9% male) from seven countries (26% Philippines, 31.5% Greece, 1% Kenya, 0.5 Oman, 35.5% India, 5% Nigeria, 0.5% Saudi Arabia). Forty two percent of students are in the second year of studies, 13% in the third year and 45% in the fourth year. The mean score of NSPIC was 4.02\u00b10.30 and the mean of CBI was4.56\u00b10.13. The mean for each factor of NSPIC was 4.39\u00b10.13 for the factor \u201cinstills confidence through caring\u201d, 3.92\u00b10.212 for \u201csupportive learning climate\u201d, 4.06\u00b10.06 for \u201cappreciation of life\u2019s meaning\u201d, 3.66\u00b10.11 for \u201ccontrol versus flexibility\u201d and 4.01\u00b10.48 for \u201crespectful sharing\u201d. The mean for each factor of CBI was 4.63\u00b10.11 for the factor \u201cassurance\u201d, 4.58\u00b10.06 for \u201cknowledge and skills\u201d, 4.55\u00b10.18 for \u201crespectful\u201d and 4.47\u00b10.14 for \u201cconnectedness\u201d. Correlation analysis showed statistically significance between relevant variables.<\/p>\n

Conclusions:<\/strong> Instructors\u2019 caring behavior affects nursing students\u2019 caring behavior. Through positive faculty modeling and role modeling, nursing students can be professionally trained to develop the competence of caring.<\/p>\n
