ABSTRACT

Introduction: International widespread use of computers has lead to fast-paced exchange of information. In the last decade, researchers and public opinion share the same questions regarding use of computers and physical or mental problems of the users.

Aim: This literature review aims at investigating the relationship between teenagers and computers and psychological and/or physical effects caused by using them.

Method: We researched all available Greek printed literature and also Medline and Scopus in English using the following keywords: “computers”, “students”, “internet and adolescents”, “psychological effects”, “effectiveness in health” individually and in various combinations. From all the studies found, only those strictly relevant to the topic were included in the present study.

Results: The use of computers as a means of education can put a limit to the established teaching conditions and can also help students with their linguistic -and non such- capability, but it shouldn’t be considered as the solution to every learning problem. Teenagers run a risk for ‘problematic internet use’, as well as for medical conditions due to prolonged computer use.

Conclusions: The use of computers in the educational procedure is considered necessary in order to promote learning. Correct use of computers and the internet can help adolescents develop their personalities and can also be a healthy means of recreation in their free time. Furthermore, adolescents should be instructed by health professionals about setting up an ergonomically sound computer workstation. This way, computer- related risks and chronic conditions can be avoided.

Key words: internet and adolescents, personal computer, health effects, students, psychological effects
